Controlled Substance Policy
Pleasant Place Psychiatry maintains strict protocols for prescribing controlled substances to ensure patient safety, regulatory compliance, and responsible medical practice.
Prescription Guidelines
How controlled substance prescriptions are issued and managed
Scheduled Appointments Only
Prescriptions for controlled substances will only be issued at regularly scheduled appointments with your prescribing provider. This ensures appropriate monitoring and continuity of care.
No Replacements
Lost, stolen, or misplaced prescriptions will not be replaced under any circumstances. Please keep your prescriptions in a secure location.
No Early Refills
There will be no early refills authorized for controlled substance prescriptions. Prescriptions may only be refilled as directed on the original prescription and must be requested during a scheduled office visit.
Urine Drug Screen
Required monitoring for patients receiving controlled substances
Annual Testing Requirement
Established patients taking controlled substances will be required to complete a urine drug test on an annual basis at a minimum. This is a standard safety measure to ensure medications are being taken as prescribed.
Random Testing
Patients may also be subject to more frequent, random urine drug testing at the provider's discretion based on individual risk factors or concerns. This additional monitoring helps ensure your safety and the effectiveness of your treatment.
Please note: Drug testing is a routine part of controlled substance management and is not punitive. It helps your provider make informed decisions about your care.
Benzodiazepine Protocol
Guidelines for benzodiazepine prescribing and discontinuation
Short-Term Use Only
Benzodiazepines carry risks of dependency and misuse. They are only intended for short-term use in treating acute conditions such as anxiety or insomnia per FDA guidelines.
Long-Term Prescribing Restrictions
Benzodiazepines will not be prescribed for long-term, daily use without significant documented need. Any extended use requires thorough clinical justification in your medical record.
Tapering Requirement
A tapering plan for discontinuation will be required after appropriate treatment duration. Your provider will work with you to safely reduce and discontinue benzodiazepine use when clinically appropriate.
Important: Benzodiazepines should never be abruptly discontinued without medical supervision. Always follow your provider's tapering schedule to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
